Great: Pretty good stuff here with a compelling storyline and some decent character development. While they have insightful storylines and intriguing plots, these anime don't really blow you away! Not to say they wont keep you hooked though - sometimes the only reason I've put them under 'great' instead of 'awesome' is because of bad animation or other issues like that.
Alright: We're getting to some of the average stuff with not terribly original plots and perhaps a couple annoying fillers throughout. The anime under this category are usually start out with something promising and then end up with a repetitive (not to mention boring) storyline. The anime usually stumbles on a bad or abrupt ending which kinda makes you wonder what the whole point of the anime was in the first place.
Barely Watchable: These have some sort of loose story underlying them but their focus is usually a lot of fillers and a lot of fanservice. The only reason you might sit through one of these is if its a genre you like and you have to sit through the crap to find out how it ends. Yes, I hate not knowing how something ends - it keeps me up all night. Sometimes though the endings make a decent recovery to forgive yourself for sitting through the terrible parts.
Awful: Run away and don't look back! Hopefully, I'll never have to put this down for any of the anime. This category would include those anime who have absolutely no story, characterisation, bad music and more stills than animation. There's not much more explanation needed to describe this category.
