Synopsis:
Furuya's not interested in the living, he's got zombies on the brain! When Furuya's cat dies, he decides he's going to try and bring it back to life. In the process, he stumbles across a girl who is involved in an accident and turns into a real zombie! What's Furuya going to do now that the thing he loves the most is right in front of his eyes?

Death is something pretty much every living thing would prefer never having to face on a personal level, yet this inevitable side of reality will eventually visit all of us in one way or another. Chihiro Furuya got this truth forced onto him the hard way since a very young age, it's like Grim Reaper-san developed a little crush on him and invited itself to become an inseparable, long-time unwanted friend. And death is a messy fellow who leaves ugly stains in each part of Chihiro's life; his mother died when he was little, his home doubles as a temple, a place where people seek guidance with questions of death, and his senile grandpa who wanders around the house is like a macabre declaration of how death still intends to keep his claim on the place. Losing his cat in a car accident is the last straw and Chihiro finally decides it's time to take matters into his own hands. Using the dark arts passed down by his family, he plans to rip open the gates of hell and shove Grim Reaper-san back to where he belongs. At least leave the damn pets alone.
Despite the poorly worded summary that makes the premise sound needlessly grandiose, Sankarea's nothing like that. It's a high school romantic comedy with horror undertones. Or at least that's what I was expecting beforehand, and still did somewhat based on the first episode. Although the opener had some serious back-story and a relatively dark mood, the primary set up method for the theme of death and zombies was still so ridiculous I couldn't expect anything grave to happen. Maybe the constant exposure to death drove him over the edge or there's some other logical explanation, but basically the situation is as follows: Chihiro loves zombie girls. He pauses horror flicks to check out living dead women and fantasizes about a forbidden romance with one of them because he finds lumbering and decaying female form the most attractive thing ever.
But still this anime is pretty much ~vanilla~ pretty sweet and comedic. Nevertheless the story itself worth more that words can described. :3
